This week we interview Gillian Makepeace. Gillian has been working for Debenhams for over 6 years and is now responsible for the retail giant’s affiliate marketing activities. Having also previously worked at Sainbury’s, Gill has a wealth of retail and online marketing experience, some of which she shares with us in this week’s “getting to know” interview.
So Gill, describe yourself in three words.
Outgoing, chatty, loud (this might be how my colleagues describe me rather than myself…)
Do you prefer curry or chinese?
Sex and the City or True Blood?
What advice would you give to advertisers starting an affiliate program today?
Get out and meet your affiliates. Building strong relationships with them is key to running a great affiliate program.
How was your Christmas and New Year? Any professional resolutions made for 2011?!
It was great to have a week off after a very busy few months, the batteries are now recharged and I’m ready for this years challenges. I wouldn’t say any resolutions, but we are very keen to win some awards this year!
2010 was a busy year for the Debenhams online team, what do you feel the biggest achievement in the affiliate department was last year?
I think just the rate at which the program is growing. I looked at some Hitwise stats from the last quarter recently and the amount of traffic our top affiliates are driving to Debenhams was very impressive, it was higher than our competitors.
You also recently launched the Debenhams Ireland affiliate marketing program, how is that going?
It’s going well so far. We still need to recruit more affiliates to reach our targets.
Do you see your affiliate marketing activities further diversifying in 2011? What will be your main focus for the next 12 months?
Of course, we are always looking for ways to improve the program. Over the next 12 months we will be focusing on some technical advancements to the site, which will enable us to have more data about our affiliate performance. Therefore letting us run a better program. We are also hoping to launch more programs in 2011 expanding into international markets.
What has been your finest moment at Debenhams?
After 4 years in imagery and content roles for Debenhams I got the job of managing the affiliate program. It has definitely been a good career move.
Next week we get to know Jess Markwood, Editor of OSOYOU and other Aigua Media titles…
