New tool to help website publishers comply with the EU ePrivacy Directive

This week we launched a tool that enables publishers and advertisers to comply with the EU ePrivacy Directive.

The Directive, which has also now been enforced in national laws, requires website owners to offer users comprehensive information about the use of tracking measurements in their website and obtain users’ consent for their use. In order to address the Directive affilinet put together an expert forum of solicitors, trade organisations and figures from across the performance marketing industry. The regular forum takes place to discuss the ongoing development of the legislation and its implications for everyday business.

And it’s as a result of the initial forum, that we have developed the Consent Wizard that enables publishers to quickly and simply configure an appropriate ‘consent layer’ for their site without needing any programming knowledge. By integrating the code snippet, the consent layer is automatically displayed to customers landing on the publishers’ website and they will be asked to give their consent. The solution addresses all the different regulatory requirements across Europe and offers three options to create a JavaScript layer, which can simply be integrated into individual websites. In addition the Consent Wizard gives the option to offer opt-outs from third party providers.

Our CEO, Dr. Dorothea von Wichert-Nick, highlights that the EU ePrivacy Directive is both a challenge and an opportunity for the industry: “Understandably, Internet users are increasingly concerned about what happens to their data online and how their activities on the Internet are tracked. As a market we have to provide users with objective information to answer these questions so that they can make informed decisions for themselves. After all survey evidence shows that providing transparency ultimately results in higher levels of acceptance.”
